LIBE477B: A Starting Point [Vision of the Future #1]

Vision of the Future: Where to Start?

As I approach this project, my first thought is that whatever comes out at the end of this, I would like it to be useful to the broader education community. This is not me having very lofty goals (although it might be), but it’s just a part of my personality – I like creating things for the purpose of a wide audience to consume and use. I have dabbled in lots of digital-based creations over the years, including making websites, blogs and videos. This course has challenged me to broaden my digital skill set, so I really want to take up the ante and try something I had never done before.

Now, the main problem is, what will I focus my project on? Currently, I am only working a temporary position and will be back to TOC-ing quite soon. The two months that I have been back teaching in Canada, while being a good experience with delving into this program and speaking with like-minded colleagues, hasn’t yet been long enough time for me to switch gears over to thinking like a “teacher-librarian.” Everything I do is still firmly rooted in being a “teacher.” So thus, I want to use my vision of the future project to teach.

As I’ve immersed myself in this course and the many others that I’m taking at the same time, I’ve found that the skills for 21st-century learning are something that resonate strongly with me, partly due to the fact that I felt like I had to quickly learn those skills myself when I entered university. The feeling of being overwhelmed and being wholly unprepared in a world that required 21st century literacy skills was a huge factor in the development of my own mental problems, so I feel a desire to share with students the power of these skills to better equip them for when they have to go out in the world and become functional members of society. While this may change as I work more on the project, I would really like to focus on the power of reading, as Stephen Krashen’s lecture on YouTube was one of the most inspirational videos I have ever watched over the past two months and is the one I keep going back to over and over again.

I haven’t quite narrowed down what type of format I would like to use yet, but it will have to be one that is succinct and engaging. I am currently deciding between using a video format like PowToon or an infographic like Canva. These are both pieces of technology that, while I’m aware of them, I haven’t dabbled too much into using so it will be a learning experience for me as I work to finish this project.
